When mom passed away in December 2009, my family entrusted me with her two recipe boxes. Among the great recipes was the cinnamon sauce recipe. Mom used the cinnamon sauce to pour over angel food cake; however, the cinnamon sauce recipe is good for topping ice cream, angel food cake, pancakes, French toast or crepes. This recipe is so easy to make, try making mom’s cinnamon sauce recipe for your family and see what they want to put it on.

Challah: Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Recipe

I was watching The Chew and Challywood Jewish Bakery in California was featured on the show. Some of the Challah’s were the traditional braided variety; however, the one that caught my eye was the Apple Cinnamon pull-apart Challah.

I went on the search for the recipe to make a Challah. Most of the dough recipes were very similar, it was the way they were assembled or topped, that made the difference.

Some of the apple cinnamon Challah recipes seem a tad complicated; therefore, I used the recipe in my bread machine book and tried mimicking what I remembered Challywood saying about their apple cinnamon pull-apart recipe. Of course, Challywood did not give out their recipe so this is just a simulation of the real thing.

Ingredients for making an Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Challah:

  • 2 Eggs at room temperature; plus enough water at 80 degrees F to make 1 ½ cups
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • ¼-Cup oil
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4 ½ Cups bread flour
Topping:
  • Apples; diced
  • Cinnamon and sugar
Glaze:
  • 2 Egg yolks
  • 1 Tbsp water
Instructions for making an Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Challah:

1)    Using a bread maker, add the ingredients in the order listed. Set it to dough and let it go. It will take over an hour to mix and rise.
2)    Punch it down and transfer to a flour or oiled surface. I could not remember how many balls they had so I divided mine into 12 balls. Attempt to make the balls the same size, however, if they are not; do not fret.
3)    Liberally place apple chunks between each ball and even a few under and on top of them. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, the amount you use is up to you.
4)    Place the pan in a warm humid place and allow the balls to double in size. Dab with the egg yolk glaze and place in a preheated oven set at 350 degrees.
5)    Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Cinnamon Honey Facial Mask: Things in your kitchen

Look goofy for good skin!
With the cinnamon honey facial mask, you will not break the budget, and you will more than likely already have all the ingredients in your kitchen or pantry. Get great feeling skin with all these natural ingredients.

What you will need for the Cinnamon Honey Facial Mask:

• 1 Tbsp Honey
• ½ Tsp Cinnamon
• ½ Tsp Nutmeg

Alternatively, for larger quantity:

• ¼ Cup Honey
• 2 Tablespoons Nutmeg
• 2 Tablespoon Cinnamon

“Raw honey has long been prized for its healing properties. Used as a mask, it is excellent for cleansing and toning the skin. A cinnamon honey mask is rumored to help acne-prone skin. Raw honey can also be used with sugar as a scrub for glowing skin,” explains Kevin Trudeau
According to Acne Skin Site, “Nutmeg is wonderful when used as a spot treatment for pimples. It reduces inflammation, redness, and acne-causing bacteria. It will dry out the pimples quickly and with no further irritation to the skin. Nutmeg is much safer than using a topical acne treatment that contains ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
Cinnamon works to kill acne by drying out the affected area and brings blood and oxygen to the surface to open the pores and unclog the bacteria and excess oil that settle there. A little goes a long way so don’t overdo it on the cinnamon. This face mask will show immediate results by leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth, while appearing noticeably less inflamed and reducing redness”

Steps for the Cinnamon Honey Facial Mask:

1) Wash your face simply spread on your face when you have time to relax and not worry about looking goofy.
2) Allow no less than 20-minutes for the mask to be on your face; however, I have let the mask on my face for an hour before taking shower to wash it off.
3) Using a circular motion scrub your face and then rinse the mask off, I find doing this before my shower is the easiest. I scrub looking into the mirror as to see where I need to scrub and then rinse off while in the shower, however, you can do this all while standing at your sink.

If you prefer to make the larger quantity, simply store in a zip lock baggie or an airtight container.

Cinnamon Raisin Bread

I have been baking for Christmas and wanted bread or something easy to grab for breakfast. I had originally thought I would make Challah bread either in a round pan or the braided version.

As I was searching for that recipe I found the recipe for Cinnamon Raisin Bread. It smelled so good and I wanted to cut into it but I haven't. Instead I froze it so break out next week. My husband mentioned icing for the bread so I may do that too.  Either way this bread will definitely be good with apple or peach honey.

Ingredients to make Cinnamon Raisin Bread:

  • 2 eggs at room temperature and enough warm water to equal 1 cup
  • 2 ½ tsp yeast
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 3 to 3 ½ cups bread flour
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ½ cup nuts; optional

Instructions to make Cinnamon Raisin Bread:

    1. I use a bread maker to mix; as it is mixing, you can see if the 3 cups of flour is enough or if you need to add a tad more. Let the bread rise, it will be double the size.
    2. Spray one loaf pan with a vegetable spray, and let the bread rise again.
    3. In a preheated oven, bake the cinnamon raisin bread at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 minutes.

Technically it is not even winter, however, the weather has been so cold, trying a new bread recipe and heating the oven sounds good. Keeping out of it while hot will be the toughest part.

I love watching The Chew, they have such good recipes. The whole Chew crew is fun to watch while they show the world how to make fantastic recipes.

It is Christmas Time: Baking Time

Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Challah

Well it is baking time once again for the Christmas get-togethers. As usual, I will make the old familiar cookies; however, this year I will try Almond Joy Cookies, as a couple of us do like coconut.

I have added Herb Bread and Herb Wheat bread to our diets lately, even my oldest grandson likes the Herb Bread, it will be on the menu.

This year I am trying something new to me in every sense of the word. I had never heard of Challah, however, while watching The Chew, I saw Challywood Jewish Bakery make an Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Challah and knew I had to try it.

It was my first attempt of mimicking their Challah, therefore, next time I need to adapt my recipe to have more apples, cinnamon and sugar. But all-in-all I thought it was delicious.

Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

Whether you consider a pumpkin to be a vegetable or a fruit is of little importance, what you make with the pumpkin is. Using pumpkin in recipes adds so many vitamins and moisture, however, adds little calories. It’s a oh my goodness, win-win situation.  Carving pumpkins for Halloween is fun however; the pumpkin cinnamon roll is one of the recipes you will want to make our family for a healthier breakfast alternative.
