Decorah Bald Eagle Nest: 3 Eaglets

It has been a fun adventure all week popping in on the bald eagles in Decorah, Iowa.

Last weekend when I learned about the site, there were 2 eaglets; one obviously stronger than the other one, and one un-hatched eaglet egg. Is that the politically correct thing to say? Hmmmm, not up on all my birdie talk.

While I was at work Thursday a.m., the 3^rd egg hatched. I have been keeping an eye on the babies to see if they are all eating. When we learned we had a nest of bald eagles at Dewart Lake, others told us when there are multiple births one will dominate the nest. Last summer I did see 2 of the immature eagles flying about so not sure how many eggs had been laid and hatched

After Saturday night feeding time was done, shortly after dinner, the strongest peep decided he wanted to see the light of day. They are getting stronger every day.

Easter Sunday after lunch the bald eagle let the peeps hang out in the sunshine, however, it was on high alert watching whatever was in the area.

This Monday morning, mom or dad, I cannot tell the difference; eats and let the little ones hang out until covering them back up.

On Facebook today, our daughter sent me link to a live feed of a bald eagle setting on the nest. She knows we have bald eagles at our summer cottage at Dewart Lake, therefore, she knew I would be interested. When I logged in approximately 4 p.m. the wind was howling ruffling the eagles feathers and momma eagle was setting on the nest. I thought I saw 2 eggs.

I have watched the feed long enough now the sun is casting shadows blurring the pictures, however, dad had brought a late lunch back to mom that she seemed to be ignoring until daddy came back and at that point I saw one egg and 2 babies.

Here in Indiana it is now 8:23 p.m. and dark; however in Iowa it is 7:23 and sun still shining. Honestly, I find watching this feed, far more interesting than most television programming. It makes me long for summer days and watching the bald eagle at our Dewart Lake cottage.

Halloween at Dewart Lake

I am here at the cottage and did a big oops, not bringing any candy. At the farm we never get any trick or treaters, therefore, I never gave it a thought to pick up a bag of candy for here, when I picked the the bags for the Light the Night party. 

I miss seeing my grandchildren every day but not getting to see them all dressed up stinks too. 

 

With that said, I hope my boys will be dressed warm as the forecast here is down right cold and ugly.

Last October I was in KY for Grandparents Day and actually saw the baby girl's costume come together. I am uncertain of any of the costumes this year so hoping to see a lot of photographs.

October at Dewart Lake

October at Dewart Lake is extremely quiet. There is very little water activity. There are a few die-hard fishermen that like to fish, and I have seen a few birds, squirrels and crazy looking frog.

I typically love Fridays

However, for the most part the weekend visitors have packed it in. The neighbor to our left actually has his windows are plastic over so I doubt they will return.

  

With a busy crazy summer, I did not get to the cottage as much as I desired and the when I did get here, many of the days were less than desirable. In August it went to extremes of needed all the windows open and the fans on to needing the propane heater turned on, I expected that this October weekend, however, not in August and September.

This maybe my last weekend at the summer cottage for 2014, unless I sneak away one more time before winterizing it. The winters in Indiana can be rough and winter of 2013-14 was down right brutal making visits nearly impossible. In addition, many of the neighbors have called it a season and it is very quiet and almost lonely here.

This weekend, I have talked to no one, from my living room window I did see an elderly couple that live here year round, they were walking lakefront just checking things out.

It is a breezy and chilly 55 degree day but the sun is warm therefore I have tried to enjoy as much as I can. I am a sunshine girl and really not looking forward to winter.

Extremely Sorry about Being Inactive

I am so extremely sorry about being inactive as of late; the whole month of March I was down with shingles. 
Also, between working on a poor functioning Bubblews and RedGage, I have also visited the summer cottage at Dewart Lake to get it open for the season.

Worst of all, is attempting to work with dial-up no matter where I am. 

Even working on this blog is a challenge as half the time I attempt to load a photograph is a bust. I guess in essence working online has just lost my love and attention.

July 4th at the Cottage

 Well I actually came up to the cottage July 3 and I am staying until Monday am when I go straight to the gym to exercise. It has been a great break. 



 
 I had plenty of good juicy watermelon.

I've seen birds, turtles; small and ex-large, old friends, family 

 

and of course fireworks from all the neighbors and the ones the lake association shot off over the lake.

And homegrown green beans and tators that my husband picked, cleaned, cooked and delivered to me at the cottage.


Oh. I did do a little work on Bubblews and RedGage, since I  have the luxury of using someone elses high speed WI-FI. Life at Dewart Lake can be so good.

Strange Memorial Day Weekend

While the weather went from 90 degrees the Wednesday before Memorial Day, all the way down to 39 degrees for the low, we also went from dry dry dry land to rain and more rain. Even on this Tuesday the weather a tad warmer however, the sky is dark and eerie.
I wanted to set outside and soak up some sun while reading, working, writing and relaxing. However, I did get weeds pulled and a tad bit read and some writing done it has been a hit and miss on the sunshine.

One great thing has been the activity of the birds. The weather doesn't stop them,however, it does bring them out at different times. The swallow has loved the rain as it drives the bugs out and it can swoop down and get them.
I also have noticed the little birds picking on the big birds. The red-winged blackbird was showing the Blue Heron who was boss and a little one I could not see was on the Eagles tail.

I tried to keep count of all the different birds I spotted at I believe I am at 16 although there might  be a couple more I know has been here in the past but not sure if I saw them this weekend. I did not get pictures of all the different birds however, I tried my best.

How is your Mood on this Last Sunday in May?

My question to all Bubblews writers and RedGage people; how is your mood on this last Sunday in May? I am setting here, at the summer cottage, alone as predicted and at times, the silence of the solitude can be deafening.

The weather forecast is one that could be very discouraging, however, at this moment in time the sky is blue with shattered clouds The rain and thunderstorms are to move in later tonight so for Memorial Day Monday, with all the celebrations around could be dampened.

For me, however, while I should be getting articles written, reading done and pictures posted to RedGage my mood is a blue as the still sky.  

I see families on boats, I see fishermen with their poles in the water just reeling in fish after fish. I am reading post after post on Facebook where grandmothers are enjoying the company of not only their children but also their grandchildren. You can read in Proverbs, the very wise chapter in the Bible many things about families. Here is a great verse; Proverbs 17:6; NIV, “Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”

While I am aware this is satans attack to defeat, I simply refuse to stay in this frame of mind. Our God is mighty to save and he will never leave me; therefore, I need to stop dwelling on what cannot be, and focus on the beauty around me.

Spring has Sprung at Dewart Lake

Spring has finally arrived at Dewart Lake, today it is 66 degrees and most sunny. The sky is blue with white clouds scattered about. This morning I spent the time in the cottage doing some spring-cleaning; might I say yuck, however it needs it and if I do a little each time up it’s not as hard to do. The harder part will be later this summer when scraping of old paint and touch up painting is done.

About 2 o’clock, I said enough is enough and decided to come out and enjoy the sun. I did trim the grass a bit, in case the neighbors decide to mow. About 45 minutes to an hour later, I decided I was glad I had a pair of shorts. It was no nice to feel the sun on the skin again.

 

The lake is alive with boats, fishermen, kayakers and I do not know what the other things were. They were like wave runner or skidoo; however, they were standing up.

 

The birds are active too. I have seen red winged black birds, male and female, blue heron, bald eagle, geese, ducks, swans, nuthatch, blue jay and some little bird that is unfamiliar to me. 

At first, I thought it was a baby duck, however, no parents around so that was unlikely. Getting a good look at them is challenging too as soon as you try to focus, they submerge and swim under water and pop up where they are not expected.

  

Of course, as I am writing I still have my camera near by in hopes to get even a better picture of the Bald Eagle. Although, I think it will be touch beating the photograph of him/her capturing a fish for lunch. If you have not seen that great capture, you can see it on RedGage or Bubblews.
